Arizona has some beautiful hiking trails. Brown’s Ranch is full of rich history. The city of Scottsdale purchased upper ranch land in 1999 to protect the land from urban development. They have a done a beautiful job preserving the history.
Uncovered ancient artifacts reveal evidence that thousands of years before the ranchers the land was used by Hohokam, O’odham and Appache people as hunting camps. Brown’s Ranch was a 44,000-acre cattle operation. Established in 1916 by E. O. Brown. His son, E. E. “Big Brownie” Brown managed the ranch. Brownie and his wife Goldie built a homestead and managed local water lines and windmills until Brownie’s death in 1966. You can see remnants of the homestead on the hiking trail. Each morning hike is full of surprises. It is common to run into lovable donkeys, horses or dogs enjoying the trails.
